“In 1886 at age 21, my grandfather, Michel Carangelo, left his home in Naples to seek the American Dream. From his pushcart on the streets of New York City, he devised a street vending enterprise of selling roasted chestnuts and "spedini de carne" which dates back to Roman Times (or "meat on a stick" - similar to shishkabobs that were introduced later) which they called "Spiedini" or "Spiedi" for short. Many years later a local newspaper acclaimed this Italian immigrant "The First Street Vendor in New York City," but, over time, restauranteurs and major grocery chains have claimed the "Spiedi" as their own.”
